This beautiful houseplant is related to regular spider plants that I am sure your are familiar with probably on a shelf in your grandparents downstairs toilet!...... but this subspecies is far more interesting! Makes a superb and easy to manage houseplant. Almost impossible to kill, it will thrive best in a slightly cooler room or position (i.e. not on a shelf over a radiator) and whilst it likes bright natural light, leaves will get scorched if exposed to full sun especially in summer.Like most spider plants, Fire Flash is surprisingly hardy despite its origins in the rain forests of Tanzania and will be happy to spend its summers outside in the garden or patio in pots, containers or planted directly in partially shaded positions.
Germination & Growing Guide
- Sow indoors at any time of year
- Sprinkle seeds onto surface a well draining compost in seed tray
- Compost should ideally be a well draining 50/50 mix of regular compost and horticultural sand
- Cover seeds with a very fine layer or sieved compost
- Place tray in a warm place with good light eg window sill over a radiator
- Keep moist but not wet - best to water from the bottom by having seeds tray inside a waterproof container.
- Seedlings should appear in 4-6 weeks depending on conditions
- Transplant to individual pots once seedlings have three leaves
- The orange markings will appear after about 6 months as the plants grow
- Once established, very easy to care for! All it needs is decent potting, a bright spot out of direct sun a good soak once a week. Avoid chemical fertilisers. If you are in area with high flouride in your tap water, using rain water is preferable.
