Please Note: We recently moved from using Live UK moss to this improved Chilean product which is much more effective as a growing media for most plants without issues surrounding contamination with other insects and microfauna.
Growtropicals Sphagnum Moss is a premium, sustainably sourced horticultural component used primarily for its exceptional moisture retention and airy structure. This long-fibred moss, is sourced from Chile and is harvested to maintain its natural, springy texture, which resists compaction and ensures vital airflow reaches plant roots. Its high water-permeability and ability to hold up to 20 times its weight in water make it a critical tool for maintaining consistent hydration in specialized indoor environment.
The moss possesses natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, which help to inhibit decay and protect delicate root systems from pathogens. It is versatile in its application, serving as an ideal medium for seed germination, air-layering, and the propagation of tropical cuttings. When used as a component in substrate mixes or as a topper for potted specimens, it dramatically increases local humidity levels. Its neutral pH and low soluble salt concentration make it perfect for growing indoors, particularly for epiphytic species such as orchids and aroids that require a balance of high moisture and high oxygen.
This product is harvested from managed wetlands in Chile, where the top layers of Sphagnum are hand-picked to ensure renewable growth.
We ship the moss lightly moist and hydrated. Gently squeeze out excess moisture before applying it to pots or poles, ensuring it remains damp to the touch but not dripping. It should never be allowed to dry out completely, as it can become hydrophobic and difficult to re-wet.
