Seed Germination
As they are native to cold climates, Skeleton Flower seeds require some cold stratification for optimal germination rates. Stratification is a process of simulating natural conditions that the seeds must experience before germination can occur (if a seed germinates in the middle of winter it will die). In the wild, seed dormancy is usually overcome by the seed spending time in the ground through a winter period and having its hard seed coat softened up by frost and weathering action. This cold, moist period triggers the seed's embryo; its growth and subsequent expansion eventually break through the softened seed coat in its search for sun and nutrients.
Seed Germination Guide
Mix the seeds with a free draining & moist mix of compost in clear grip seal bags. squeeze out excess air and place the bag in the coldest part of fridge for 6-10 weeks
Optimum time to do this is in Autumn/Winter so the seeds come out of the fridge in late winter or earlyspring
After cold stratification sow individually spaced in pots/trays of good quality compost (ideally 50% compost and vermiculite or horticultural sand.
Barely cover them with sieved compost
Cover with plastic dome (or other cover) but with air holes open
Water by misting
Germination can take 6-8 weeks at 15-20°c. Do not allow temperature to rise above 25c - so keep out of direct sunlight
