The Philodendron 'Fat Boy' (or Philodendron martianum) is a unique and sought-after plant known for its thick, swollen petioles and glossy, dark green leaves that grow in a rosette form. It's a relatively easy-to-care-for plant that can thrive indoors with the right conditions.
Philodendron Martianum Fatboy - RareHere’s a detailed guide to caring for Philodendron Martianum Fatboy :
Light
- Bright, indirect light is ideal. This mimics its natural environment as an epiphyte growing on trees in the Brazilian rainforest.
- Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
- It can tolerate lower light, but growth may slow down and the leaves may become smaller or a paler green. An east-facing window or a spot near a south or west-facing window with a sheer curtain is a good location.
Watering
- Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil have dried out. The plant's thick petioles store water, so it's more forgiving of a missed watering than some other plants.
- Do not overwater. This is the most common issue and can lead to root rot. Yellowing leaves are often a sign of overwatering.
- Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent the plant from sitting in soggy soil.
Soil
- Use a well-draining soil mix. As an epiphyte, it needs good aeration and drainage to prevent root rot.
- A good mix can include a combination of:
- Coco Coir or Peat Moss (for moisture retention)
- Perlite or Pumice (for drainage and aeration)
- Orchid Bark (to mimic its natural habitat)
- Compost or Vermicompost (for nutrients)
Humidity and Temperature
- High humidity is preferred. Being a tropical plant, it loves a humid environment.
- You can increase humidity by:
- Misting the leaves regularly.
- Using a pebble tray with water.
- Placing it in a naturally humid room like a bathroom or kitchen.
- Using a humidifier.
- Ideal temperatures are between 60-95°F (15-35°C), with a more specific ideal range of 68-71°F (20-22°C). Protect it from temperatures below 60°F (15°C) and cold drafts, as it is sensitive to the cold.
Fertilizing
- Fertilize every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Use a balanced, water-soluble liquid fertilizer, diluted to half-strength.
- Reduce or stop fertilizing during the dormant period in the fall and winter.
Other Care Tips
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant outgrows its pot. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one.
- Toxicity: Like many Philodendron species, this plant is toxic to pets and humans if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it out of reach of children and animals.
- Pests and Diseases: Watch out for common pests and diseases like brown spot and scarring. Proper care and monitoring can help prevent these issues.
