Bottle Gourd Seeds (Lagenaria siceraria) produce a vigorous, warm-season vine known for its smooth, bottle-shaped fruits that are both edible and highly versatile. Also called calabash or birdhouse gourd, this heirloom plant is widely grown around the world for culinary use as well as traditional and practical crafts.
Bottle gourd thrives in full sun and rich, well-drained soil, producing long vines that can reach 10–20 feet. Its adaptability to trellises and vertical growing makes it a strong choice for small spaces, raised beds, or container gardening outdoors. When harvested young, the tender fruits are commonly used in Indian, Chinese, and other Asian cuisines. When allowed to mature and dry, the hard shells are ideal for crafting projects.
Vigorous, Productive, and Heat-Tolerant:
- Fast-growing vines reaching 10–20 feet long
- Produces abundant, smooth-skinned bottle-shaped fruits
- Performs well in hot, sunny conditions
- Suitable for ground growing or trellised vertical gardens
- Trellising helps improve fruit shape and reduce rot
Why Customers Love Bottle Gourd:
- Dual-purpose harvest for food and crafts
- Reliable yields throughout the warm growing season
- Excellent choice for vertical gardening
- Long history of use in global cuisines and traditional projects
How to Use / How to Grow:
Plant bottle gourd seeds in full sun after the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures are warm. Choose nutrient-rich soil and water consistently to support vigorous growth and fruit development. Space plants generously or provide a sturdy trellis to support climbing vines and encourage evenly shaped gourds.
Harvest fruits young for cooking, when the skin is tender. For crafting, allow gourds to fully mature on the vine until the shell hardens, then cure and dry them in a well-ventilated space.
